Baltic Sea Spray Emissions: In Situ Eddy Covariance Fluxes vs. Simulated Tank Sea Spray

چکیده

We present the first ever evaluation of sea spray aerosol eddy covariance (EC) fluxes at near coastal conditions and with limited fetch, over water brackish (on average 7 ppt). The measurements were made on island Garpen in Baltic Sea (56°23? N, 16°06? E) September 2005. found that wind speed is a major factor driving an exponential increase salt emissions, comparable to previous studies waters higher salinity. able show inclusion thermodenuder EC system allowed for parallel dry unheated flux (representing both organic emissions) heated (300 °C) non-volatile emissions. This study’s experimental approach also included artificial formed tank locally sampled same location as fluxes. attempted use scale emissions order derive complete size distribution emission below range (0.3–2 µm diameter) optical particle counters (OPCs) system, covering total 0.01 2 diameter. In directions long fetches (corresponding similar open sea), we distinguish between (sea only) smallest bins OPC, could therefore indirectly estimate fraction. agreement several ambient experiments deriving resolved chemical mass concentration water-insoluble spray, our showed sprays dominated by sizes ?1 diameter, organics OPC sizes. Since used direct measures fluxes, confirmed suggestions this signature aerosols. two source parameterizations (Mårtensson et al. Eddy covariance measurements of sea spray particles over the Atlantic Ocean

Most estimates of sea spray aerosol source functions have used indirect means to infer the rate of production as a function of wind speed. Only recently has the technology become available to make high frequency measurements of aerosol spectra suitable for direct eddy correlation determination of the sea spray particle flux. This was accomplished in this study by combining a newly developed fas...

Production Flux of Sea Spray Aerosol

[1] Knowledge of the size‐ and composition‐dependent production flux of primary sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles and its dependence on environmental variables is required for modeling cloud microphysical properties and aerosol radiative influences, interpreting measurements of particulate matter in coastal areas and its relation to air quality, and evaluating rates of uptake and reactions of g...

Ocean Sea Spray, Clouds, and Climate

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles provide the connection between the ocean and the atmosphere with a profound and not yet fully understood impact on climate; in this issue, in related papers, teams lead by Kimberly Prather and Timothy Bertram have completed studies that together shed light on important factors in SSA composition and properties. What has been known is that aerosols scatter solar...
